IP address

IP address i.e Internet Protocol address is a digital tag assigned to each device connected to a computer network that communicates using the Internet Protocol. IP addresses have two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

” It is a unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network. ”

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) defines an IP address as a 32-bit number. However, due to the growth of the Internet and the exhaustion of available IPv4 addresses, a new version of IP (IPv6) using a 128-bit IP address was developed in 1995 and standardized in December 1998. In July 2017, the final definition of the agreement was published. IPv6 deployment has been ongoing since the mid-2000s

IP addresses are usually written and displayed in human readable symbols, such as 172.16.254.1 in IPv4 and 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1 in IPv6.

Function

IP addresses have two main functions. It identifies the host, or more specifically the network interface, which provides the host’s location in the network, thereby providing the ability to establish a path to that host. Its characteristics are as follows: “A name indicates what we are looking for. An address indicates its location. A route indicates how to get there.” The header of each IP packet contains the IP address of the sending host and the IP address of the target host. .
