Sony may have stopped using G lenses on its phones

From the Sony Xperia Z1 launched in 2013 to the Xperia XZ3 in 2018, Sony has adopted its G-lens series as the main camera for its smartphones. The information that surfaced last month claimed that Sony may have replaced the G lens with the ZEISS MILVUS lens, which can be used on the Xperia 1 advanced flagship phone announced in February this year. According to Sumahoinfo, they learned from employees at the Sony Thailand factory that Sony will replace the G lens with a Carl Zeiss lens on a smartphone.

The image of the Sony Xperia 1 triple camera sensor that surfaced last month showed that the Japanese tech giant used a pair of ZEISS 12 megapixel lenses and Samsung’s 12 megapixel sensor. The publication claims that some employees at the Thai factory also claimed that Sony used the ZEISS lens instead of the G lens on Xperia. Therefore, it seems that Sony’s upcoming high-end smartphone may not have a G lens.

It is said that the ZEISS lens is as good as the G lens. Therefore, the use of Zeiss lenses may not have any significant improvement in image quality. That being said, the possible reason for the praise of the Xperia 1’s camera performance is due to the addition of new camera features, the publication claims.

Sony is reportedly developing the Xperia 2 flagship phone. The phone’s CAD renderer was released last month by @OnLeaks. Subsequent products for Xperia 1 are expected to use a three-camera setup. According to reports, the company has launched a ZEISS lens on its smartphone, but the Xperia 2 may not be equipped with a G lens. Sony has not yet issued an official statement to confirm that it has switched to its smartphone’s Zeiss lens.

The Japanese tech giant is known for using the IFA technology trade show platform to announce its new phones in the second half of this year. Possibly, the company may announce the Xperia 2 phone at the IFA 2019 event in September. There are rumors that the Xperia 2 may be equipped with a 6.2-inch CinemaWide display that provides a 21:9 aspect ratio. It can be powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6 GB of RAM.
