Reliance said on Monday that its Jio GigaFiber broadband service will be available on September 5. Reliance Jio founder Mukesh Ambani posted the news at the 2019 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM).
Reliance Jio’s fiber data plans start at Rs 700 and up to Rs 10,000. Jio Fiber’s basic plan will provide a data rate of 100 Mbps with a maximum speed of 1 Gbps. Jio even showed speed testing of its GigaFiber service, reaching 1 Gbps of network speed.
The Jio Fiber data plan will bundle the premium OTT platform. Jio has not specified exactly which OTT plans it will offer. Currently, Jio users can subscribe to Hotstar for free. Jio also offers a “welcome offer” for users who choose Jio Fiber’s annual program. These customers will receive a free HD or 4K LED TV and a 4K Jio set-top box.
Jio also announced that its premium Jio Fiber customers will receive new movies on the same day. Jio calls it the “first day show” feature, which will be available in mid-2020. More features of Jio Fiber users include free voice calls to anyone in the country. Jio also introduced a US/Canada international call rate that is priced below Rs 500 per month.
Once Jio Fiber is launched nationwide, interested customers can register through the My Jio app or the Jio official website. The company plans to cover 20 million homes and 15 million businesses in 1,600 towns through its Jio Fiber service.
With the launch of Jio GigaFiber, Reliance Jio announced its entry into broadband services at AGM last year. At the time of launch, Mukesh Ambani said that Jio GigaFiber will support three levels of users starting with homes, small businesses and large enterprises. Beginning August 15, 2018, Jio began a beta trial of the GigaFiber service in India.
Jio GigaFiber offers a preview offer that gives users 100 Mbps and 100 GB of data in 90 days. Once this data is exhausted, users can get an extra 40GB of data.
